2017 - AAKF Great Lakes Region

• March 10th and 11th
The 25th Windy City tournament is dedicated to the memory of the masters who were among the first to introduce karate in the United States - Sensei Nishiyama, Sensei Sugiyama, Sensei Dometrich, Sensei Kim. The event will start with a seminar from 6 pm to 8:30 pm on Friday, March 10th. The tournament for chidlren, teens and adutls will follow on Soturday morning. • March 25th
The University of Minnesota Traditional Karate Tournament will take place on Saturday, March 25, at the Recreation & Wellness Center, 123 SE Harvard St, Minneapolis, MN 55455. For more information and for registration, please visit their web site.

• April 21st - 23rd
The 2017 Shuhari Cup will take place on Saturday, April 23rd. The details and registration information are at their web site.

• June 20th - 22nd
The AAKF Great Lakes Region and the Madison Japanese Karate Club are hosting the AAKF/WTKF International Camp as part of the 2017 AAKF National Cahmpionships. Join us in Madison, WI for three days of intentive training. Please visit the event page for more information and registration.

• June 23rd - 24th
The AAKF Great Lakes Region and the Madison Japanese Karate Club are hosting the 56th AAKF National Championships and International Good Will Tournament. Join us in Madison, WI, where the best traditional karate athletes will showcase their abilities. Please visit the event page for more information and registration.

• November 11th
The Madison Japanese Karate Club will host their annual tournament on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. The details and registration information will be at the tournament web site.

Past Events - 2016



• June 24th - 25th
Adult kyu ranks, adult black belts, and youth divisions competed for the national title at the 55th AAKF National Champrionships, which took palce in Minneapolis, MN. The results are on Facebook.

Our region was represented in the youth division by the O'Connor brothers from Waunakee, WI, and by members of the Madison Japanese Japanese Karate Club in the adult kyu rank division. The O'Connor brothers took furst place in Enbu and in Team Kata, and 3rd and 4th place in the individual competition. Yuko Nishikawa took second place and Tara Schmudlach took 4th place in the individual competition, and the team kata of Tara Schmudlach, Yuko Nishikawa, and Lauren Tatus took third place in the adult kyu rank competition.

• October 12th - 17th
The World Traditional Karate-Do Champoinships took place in Cracow, Poland. among the AAKF members selected to represent the United States in this tournament were Sean and Andy O'Connor. The tournament results are available on the WTKF website.

Past Events - 2014



• April 25th - 27th
The AAKF Spring National Seminar took place at Northwestern University. Members of the AAKF technical comittee led by the chair Sensei Fusaro shared their insights about karate practice in a series of great training sessions. We thank all those who took the time to participate. More informations and pictures will be coming soon.

Past Events - 2013



• June 21st - 22nd
The 52nd AAKF National Championship took place in Chesterfield, Missouri. Our region was represented by a formidable group of athletes from the Enso club and the O'Connor brothers from Waunakee, WI, with excellent results for both the youth and adult competitions. The Illinois state adult men's kata team, comprised of Sensei Jay Nacu, Gerardo Fernandez, and Alejandro Fernadez took the silver, and Sensei Denise Nacu took third place in women's individual kata, and fourth place in individual kumite. In the youth divisions the regional representatives took home many gold silver and bronze medals. The full results of the tournament are avaiable from the AAKF web site.


Past Events - 2012



• April 27th - 29th
The 2012 AAKF National Spring Seminar took place in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, hosted by the Shotokan Karate Association Wisconsin club. The event was very successful, and reviews of the seminar by members of the region are now available.

• June 15th - 16th
The 51st AAKF National Championship took place in Los Angeles, California. Our region had improved representation, with Denise Nacu placing in the top four in women's individual kata, Jay Nacu and Gerardo Fernandez reaching the final 8 in men's individual kata (out of more than 30 participants), and the Illinois Kata and Kumite teams taking third place in their divisions.
